The Autism Treatment Center of America

The Son-Rise Program (from www.AutismTreatment.org)
The Autism Treatment Center of America has provided innovative training programs for parents and professionals caring for children with Autism and other developmental difficulties. Over 25,000 families from over 80 countries have been helped by The Son-Rise Program.

Created for Parents by Parents

The Son-Rise Program was created by authors and teachers Barry “Bears” Neil Kaufman and Samahria Lyte Kaufman in 1974 when their son, Raun, was diagnosed as severely and incurably autistic. The Kaufmans’ unique program, a departure from existing methods of treatment, transformed Raun from a mute, withdrawn child with an IQ of less than 30 into a highly verbal, socially-interactive youngster with a near-genius IQ. He graduated from an Ivy-League university, bearing no trace of his former condition and is now the Global Director of Education of the Autism Treatment Center of America.

Children Treated with Love and Respect
The Son-Rise Program embraces the physical and emotional expressions of autism with care and understanding and focuses on respect and deep caring as the most important factor impacting a child’s motivation to learn. Instead of forcing a child to conform to a world they do not yet understand, we seek to engage the child in their world first, striving to understand what will be most effective to the individual child’s growth. Through enthusiastic and playful interactions, the children invite us into their world, and then we guide them in to ours.

What Makes The Son-Rise Program so Different and so Effective?
The Son-Rise Program was the first to treat Autism Spectrum Disorders as relational and neurological challenges versus behavioral. This program places parents, not doctors or therapists, as key teachers. Parents’ long-term commitment and deep love encourages and inspires caring relationships with their children. It also focuses on the home, rather than clinics, as the most stable and nurturing environment in which to help a child. The Son-Rise Program implements a very specific method based on a Developmental Model to guide parents step-by-step, enabling their children to dramatically improve in all areas of learning, social development, communication and skill acquisition. Equally significant, The Son-Rise Program helps bring playfulness, laughter and joy into a child’s life.
